Roman Monuments on the Middle Danube
Musilová Margaréta, Turčan Vladimír (eds.)
As its title suggests, the publication Roman Monuments on the Middle Danube - from Vindobona to Aquincum presents a unique guide to the surviving Roman monuments in the territory of Slovakia and its adjoining countries. A result of cooperation between specialists from three neighbouring states, the book is aimed above all at the general reader.
Although the Roman province of Pannonia included only areas on the right bank of the river Danube such as Gerulata, the Roman settlement unearthed in Bratislava-Rusovce, this guide also covers nearby Carnuntum and Vindobona (Vienna) in today's Austra, as well as Arrabona (Győr), Brigetio (Komárom) and Aquincum (Budapest) in present-day Hungary - and so enables you to follow the traces of Roman presence by boat, or over land by car, bicycle, or on foot. That the Romans in their campaigns against the Germanic tribes ventured beyond their Empire's border fortifications line (Limes Romanus), the River Danube forming a substantial section of the frontier, is evident both from the Roman inscription carved on a cliff in Trenčín and from ample findings in Mušov, the Czech Republic. Remains of Roman forts and outposts, as well as unique stonework artifacts later re-used as masonry material in church walls or standing as solitary roadside landmarks may be admired in Slovakia, too. The book, with its selection of computer-graphic reconstructions, maps and illustrations, helps give the reader a vivid picture of the Ancient Roman world which flourished on our territory two thousand years ago.
