At the beginning of the 20th century, approximately one in four Slovaks lived in the United States, mainly in the industrial areas of the Northeast. The book is a collection of stories about immigrants from Slovakia in the US and their efforts to establish their own towns.
What is Huncút? explores the stories of these remarkable settlements through historical reports while uncovering the background of the most significant wave of immigration from present-day Slovakia to the United States.
The author, Milan Čupka, was inspired by his own family history – namely his great-grandfather's mysterious trip to Pittsburgh in 1907, which led to the departure of other relatives who are now scattered from Maryland, through Pennsylvania and Colorado, to Nevada. The author was driven by a desire to understand when Slovaks began emigrating to the US, what they experienced there, and what traces remained after this huge wave of emigration.
You will learn: •who the first Slovaks in the US were, •how difficult the journey by ship was in the 19th century, •why most of them settled in industrial cities, but some decided to go South and West to pursue their dreams of becoming settlers.
What is Huncút? will give you a new perspective on your Slovak roots.
