Vychází v anglickém jazyce ve spolupráci se Seminářem dějin umění Masarykovy univerzity. The present collection of texts is a result of a unique professional and collegial meeting of doctoral students from Department of Art and Archaeology at Princeton University and the Department of Art History at Masaryk University, culminating in the symposium called “Parallel Inquiries: Art and Visual Culture in Early Modern Central Europe” which took place in Brno on March 23, 2012. Despite the geographic distance separating the symposium participants and the diversity of their themes, all speakers shared the same interest: visual culture of the early modern era in Europe, especially Central Europe. The symposium provided an extraordinary possibility for the students to meet in person and introduce the different approaches practiced in each of the departments. The different local and transatlantic approaches are not incompatible at all, they seem complementary. The essays by Zdeňka Míchalová, Jennifer Morris, Elizabeth J. Petcu, Abigail D. Newman, Filip Komárek, Zuzana Macurová, Tomáš Valeš and Michal Konečný result from concentrated research carried out at two distant but in many ways similar institutions for whom early-modern Central Europe is the main point of interest. They demonstrate that the space of Ostmitteleurope offers an inexhaustible reserve of themes and many avenues for interpretation, and it is sure to remain an attractive topic for art historians for years to come.
