In 1993 he won the Aristeion European Literature Prize for his novel The Following Story. His books have been translated into many languages. "Cees Nooteboom, a celebrated Dutch novelist, turns out to be a wonderful guide to Spain and all things Spanish. With a northerner's hunger, he feasts on the heat, colour, darkness, religiosity and primitiveness of the place. Aficionados of the bustling new Spain of Gonzalez and Aznar, tower blocks and the European Union must look elsewhere, MrNooteboom prefers the corners of musty churches, the shade of holmoaks, tiny dirt roads running into the wilderness, and whatever may lie behind immense wooden doors with brass knockers."
